'The Committee'
The problem with titles and names is that they can sometimes
portray an image that causes more problems and misunderstandings
through its very existence.
So it is with Don Valley Railway Ltd. You may imagine The Committee
consisting of a group of wizened old railwaymen, experts in their
own right, full of information on how to run railways, and having
years of experience in the field of heavy engineering etc. equally,
our title could conjure up images of shiny express trains with
all the paraphernalia of the railway world.
People Like You!
Well, it’s not quite like that. The only commonality between
the people that form DVR is the express desire to see our local
railway line once again serve the communities of the Upper Don Valley.
The people behind the Don Valley Railway Project are as ordinary as
you can get. We all belong to the community that we are trying to help,
and come from all walks of life. Yes, we do have retired engine drivers;
someone with experience of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; and a
transport planner; but the vast majority of the committee have no prior
knowledge or experience in this field; we are learning as we go.
Young & Old
We have young people, middle aged people, and people of a mature age –
but we all have one thing in common, the wish to see a restored passenger
service running on our railway line, between Stocksbridge/Deepcar and
Sheffield. We fundraise to keep ourselves running and we have a small
office which we try to open as much as possible.
