Charity & Business
DVR Ltd will operate with a charitable trust overseeing the company and will be operated in a similar manner to the
North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Investment
We truly believe that the re-opening of the line to full use will bring about investment along the
whole railway corridor. We believe that the restoration of the railway infrastructure will be an
important part of the current plans for the general re-invigoration of the valley, making best use
of the spare ground, existing and new buildings and by the provision of ancillary services to the
railway and its passengers.
Employment
The railway will be operated through a mixture of full-time (and paid) staff and volunteers.
Employment opportunities will exist, not only as a direct labour force for the railway, but for the
increase in economic activity that we see developing as a result of the investment along the railway
corridor. We also hope that the workshops planned for Deepcar will have the capability to join with
Sheffield University in providing practical ‘steam engineering’ opportunities to supplement the theoretical
work for their students in engineering. Here also will be employment opportunities as the students will
need to be supervised as well as being taught. These workshops will also provide employment in the
maintenance section of DVR.
Tourism
The line winds itself amongst beautiful scenery as it leaves Sheffield on its journey to Stocksbridge,
terminating in a valley that is surrounded by wonderful countryside, well used by walkers, nature lovers
and ramblers. This presents a tourist market that would be opened up and made accessible for everyone for
the first time. Add to this the attraction of steam trains at weekends and during public holidays and you
have a tourism market just waiting to be developed. In addition to the countryside, there exist many local
attractions and areas that will benefit from an increase in activity. More activity will lead to investment
and employment and so the cycle develops. We must realise that the Steelworks, the only major employer in the
area will not be here for ever. Add to all of this our plans for a 'Living Museum’ in the valley to be
developed in conjunction with the local Historical Society and the plans are complete.
