The Penine T-'rail'
This line was once part of the rail network serving this area, and formed part of the line that reached Manchester via the Woodhead
Pass. Hence its name as the Woodhead Line. It was a major route carrying millions of tons of Yorkshire Coal over (or
rather under) the Pennines to Manchester and was so important that it was electrified decades before electrification of
other routes in order to speed up traffic between Sheffield and Manchester. Even now the line carries a certain romance
with it within the railway world and any restoration of it even in part attracts much support.
In Use?
The railway line that is the focus for our project runs from Deepcar to Sheffield, where it meets with the
rail network. The line from Deepcar Station into the Steelworks, crossing the road down from Vaughton Hill and running
along the valley floor, is the property & responsibility of Corus UK, through a subsidiary company. The line from
Deepcar Station to Sheffield belongs to Network Rail.
